Don’t Get Greasy with the Sink

Did you know that the day after Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days of the year for professional plumbers like us here at Beutler Air Conditioning & Plumbing? After devouring turkey, mashed potatoes and yummy desserts, people often toss grease, fats and oils down the sink as a convenient and quick fix during their “food coma.” The next day, pipes might begin to make peculiar sounds, emit a foul smell, drain water slowly, etc. and then it’s time to call a professional plumber.

As we begin to enter the upcoming holiday season for more extravagant meals and increased kitchen traffic, the expert team at Beutler Air Conditioning & Plumbing wants to advise the Sacramento community to be mindful of what is going down their drain. Do not pour greases, fats, and oils down any drains. Instead, donate it to your local full-service recycling center or let it harden in the freezer overnight and dispose of it in the garbage the day after.

Are you thinking back on your past holiday meals and realizing you did allow one (or more) of the above slip down the drain? Don’t fret just yet. Try these simple tricks to keep your drains and garbage disposals from incurring additional damage while you wait for the Beutler Plumbing professionals to arrive.

  • Pour hot water down the drain on a regular basis. This will help move grease along so it may not get stuck to the side of pipes, but this depends on the amount of grease that entered the drain.
  • Add baking soda and vinegar. To alleviate any bad smells, pour baking soda and vinegar to break up build-ups and flush with hot water.
  • Wait 10 minutes between showers. This allows slow, clogged drains to clear completely.

If you’re wondering what can or cannot be tossed down the drain, or if you’re experiencing any foul smells, sounds, build-up, etc. in your pipes, call Beutler Air Conditioning & Plumbing at 916-646-2222 for more information.
